Drainage holes are essential
Choose a container with unobstructed drainage holes. Decorative cachepots can work when an inner pot drains freely and is never left standing in collected water. Adding gravel to the bottom does not substitute for a drainage hole or a suitable growing medium.
Material changes the root-zone environment
- Unglazed terra-cotta is porous and can lose moisture faster, which may help some plants but increase monitoring in heat or wind.
- Glazed ceramic usually loses less moisture through the sidewall and offers visual weight, but large pieces can be difficult to move.
- Lightweight resin or composite pots are easier to reposition; secure them when wind or a tall planting could reduce stability.

The familiar upright–mounding–trailing formula can be useful, but it is only one way to design. A handsome container can also be a single beautifully grown specimen, a low tapestry of foliage, a repeated group of one flower or a calm pairing of two contrasting forms.
Build a clear structure
Choose where the eye should land. An upright plant can create height; a rounded plant can give the composition mass; and a trailer can soften the rim. There is no dependable universal schedule for container watering. Check moisture in the root zone, not only the dry-looking surface. Pot size, material, plant size, wind, exposure, temperature and the growing medium all affect how quickly water is used.
Water deeply enough to moisten the root zone and allow excess water to drain. If water races down a gap at the side while the root ball remains dry, re-wet the medium gradually. If the container stays saturated, inspect the drainage holes and reconsider the medium, pot size and plant combination. Drought-tolerant plants still need appropriate establishment water; the label does not mean “never water.”
8. Fertilize, Deadhead and Prune Only as Appropriate
Container nutrients can be depleted or leached over time, but automatic feeding is not the answer. Consider the plant, the growing medium, the season and visible growth, then follow the fertilizer label. Excess fertilizer can produce weak growth, reduce flowering in some plants or contribute to salt buildup.
Deadheading may encourage rebloom or simply improve appearance, depending on the species. Some flowers are best left for seed, wildlife value or ornamental structure.
