First brought to Richmond, California from the South during World War II, this purple tree collard has become a beloved local cultivar known for its sweet, tender leaves, handsome color, and impressive longevity.

Growing 6–10' tall and about 3' wide, Purple Tree Collard makes a striking edible landscape plant, with productive foliage that can be harvested through the seasons. Cool weather enhances the purple tones and often brings out the sweetest flavor, making winter harvests especially welcome. It is excellent for edible gardens, urban farms, perennial vegetable plantings, and sunny kitchen gardens where beauty and productivity can live side by side.
