Description
Arresting, aromatic, and unmistakably Western, Salvia apiana is the classic white sage, a California native sage prized for its silvery-white lance-shaped leaves, sculptural form, and serious dry-garden presence. Stiff, branching stems form a handsome base about 2' tall and up to 5' wide, with tall spring flower spikes rising above the foliage and carrying small white blooms that bees happily visit.
White Sage is a beautiful choice for native plant gardens, water-wise landscapes, dry slopes, habitat plantings, and sunny borders where bold foliage and fragrance matter as much as flowers. Its pale leaves glow beautifully against darker green shrubs, buckwheats, penstemons, California poppies, and ornamental grasses.
Plant Salvia apiana in full sun with very well-drained soil. Good drainage is essential, and this heat-loving sage prefers little to no summer water once established. Prune spent flower spikes after bloom to encourage a compact shape. Explore more aromatic favorites in our Salvia - Sage collection.
