Description
Abutilon striatum, commonly called Redvein Indian Mallow or flowering maple, is a dazzling shrub for gardeners who love color, height, and hummingbird action. Its 2" golden-peach, bell-shaped flowers are boldly veined in red and held in charming calyces, dangling like jeweled ornaments from upright, branching stems.
In mild USDA Zones 9–11, this fast-growing abutilon can bloom nearly year-round, bringing warm tropical-looking color to shade gardens, side yards, fences, large containers, and espalier plantings. Left alone, it can reach 15' or more, but with annual pruning it is easily kept in the 6–10' range. Pinching the tips encourages an even bushier shape, while the small maple-like evergreen leaves keep the plant handsome between bloom flushes.
Plant Redvein Indian Mallow in bright shade to part sun with rich, loamy, compost-amended soil for best growth. Side-dress with compost occasionally to keep it lush and floriferous. Find more hummingbird-friendly bloomers in our Abutilon - Flowering Maples collection.

Such a lovely tree that I tried it in zone 8B. It thrived till snow. I had read it returns from the frosty roots. It did not. Will try a new specimen in a pot this year and bring it in for winter.
