Florida flower gardening is not one long tropical season. South Florida can be tropical or near-tropical, Central Florida is a broad subtropical transition, and North Florida experiences freezes that meaningfully change plant choice and timing. Across the state, summer heat, warm nights, humidity, intense rain, seasonal dry periods, soil and coastal exposure all matter.

South, Central and North Florida are different gardens
South Florida
The longest warm season and least frequent cold occur here, especially in protected urban and coastal sites. Many tropical ornamentals can be considered, but “tropical” does not mean carefree. Warm nights, summer rain, dry-season irrigation needs, limestone-influenced soils in some areas, wind and salt exposure can determine success. Rare cold events still matter for tender plants.
Central Florida
Central Florida sits in a subtropical transition with substantial local variation. Coastal and urban gardens may stay warmer than inland low spots. A plant that functions as a shrub or perennial in a protected site may be cut back—or lost—in a colder garden. Sandy soils are common, but organic and poorly drained sites also occur; inspect the actual root zone.
North Florida and the Panhandle
North Florida has a long warm season but also real freeze exposure. Cool-season annuals can be valuable from fall into spring, while warm-season flowers must be timed around frost. Warm nights are a plant-selection filter
Some flowers tolerate high daytime temperatures yet lose vigor when nights remain warm. Others keep blooming and growing through Florida summer conditions. Choose plants with a documented fit for heat and humidity, then confirm their light, drainage and water needs. For a sunny annual example, Gomphrena ‘Gnome Purple’ is currently tagged for hot and humid climates, containers and cutting. Work with rain and drainage together
Florida’s rainy periods can deliver more water than soil can absorb, yet seasonal dry weather can leave new plantings thirsty. Sandy soil may drain rapidly; compacted layers can perch water; organic soils and low areas may stay wet; limestone-influenced sites can affect nutrient availability. Do not assume the soil type from the county name alone.

- Choose moisture-tolerant plants for genuinely wet ground and drainage-demanding plants for raised or naturally free-draining positions.
- Check the original root ball during establishment instead of assuming rain reached it evenly.
- Adjust irrigation to current rainfall, soil and plant needs rather than using a fixed schedule.
Air movement helps, but it is not a guarantee
Allow plants their mature width and avoid trapping delicate foliage in stagnant corners when a more open site is available. Morning irrigation, where appropriate and permitted, can reduce the time leaves remain wet compared with late-evening overhead watering. Still, spacing and air movement do not prevent every disease. Diagnose recurring symptoms before taking action.

Water, buildings and topography can change conditions within a short distance. Coastal water may moderate temperature, while an inland low spot collects colder air. Courtyard walls can shelter a plant in winter and intensify summer heat. Roof overhangs create dry shade even during the rainy season, and mature trees intercept rain while competing for root-zone moisture. Map these pockets in both wet and dry weather before assigning permanent plants.
Use protected positions deliberately, but do not rely on them to make an unsuitable plant dependable. A rare cold event can exceed the buffering effect of a wall, and a sheltered corner may have less air movement than the open garden.
Coastal wind and salt require site-specific choices
An exposed oceanfront garden may receive aerosol salt and abrasive wind; a protected garden farther inland may not. Use verified salt-tolerance information for plants placed in genuinely exposed sites, and remember that tolerance has limits. No ornamental is storm-proof, hurricane-proof or salt-proof. Containers and hanging baskets should be placed and secured with severe-weather planning in mind.
Plan separate cool- and warm-season displays
Florida’s most satisfying flower calendar often uses the seasons rather than fighting them. Cool-season annuals can carry color when summer performers rest, especially in North and Central Florida.
