Description
Phacelia campanularia, also known as Desert Canterbury Bells or California Desert Bells, delivers some of the most vivid gentian-blue flowers a spring garden can offer. Its 1.25" upward-facing bells appear in a bubbling caboodle of brilliant blue atop branching red stems, creating an eye-catching display that feels almost unreal.
This beloved California native annual forms low blue-green clumps with a tidy 14" x 14" silhouette, making it ideal for the front of sunny beds, native wildflower gardens, dry borders, containers, and pollinator plantings. Bumblebees adore the blooms, and the intense blue pairs beautifully with California poppies, tidy tips, sunflakes, clarkias, lupines, and native grasses.
Plant Phacelia campanularia in full sun with excellent drainage. It is happiest in lean, well-drained soil and may self-sow where conditions suit it. Compact, bright, and wonderfully bee-friendly, Desert Canterbury Bells is a small plant with spectacular spring color. I love these flowers. I got the plants just a couple of weeks ago, and they are already blooming in the front garden. Their vibrant blue is such a nice addition.
