Description
Luminous, true sky blue, and wonderfully adaptable, Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Margarita Bop’ is a standout California native foothill penstemon discovered as a chance seedling by the late Bert Wilson of Las Pilitas Nursery. Longer blooming, longer lived, and better adapted to clay-ish soil than many forms, it is a brilliant choice for water-wise gardens.
From spring into mid-summer, 1.5" snapdragon-like flowers appear in profusion on 18" stems, opening bright blue and aging to rosy purple. Glossy blue-green linear foliage forms a handsome evergreen mat up to 2' across, making ‘Margarita Bop’ useful in dry borders, rock gardens, native plantings, slopes, pollinator gardens, and containers. Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies love the nectar-rich blooms.
Plant Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Margarita Bop’ in full sun with well-drained soil. Once established, it thrives with low water and is especially valuable where unbeatable blue color is needed. Avoid soggy roots for best performance. Explore more habitat-friendly favorites in our California Native Perennials collection.
