You cannot get much easier to grow than Linaria purpurea, the classic purple toadflax that has lit up old gardens for generations. This graceful perennial sends up slender spikes of tiny violet-blue, snapdragon-like flowers above narrow blue-grey leaves, creating an airy, vertical texture that looks beautiful without ever feeling heavy or formal.
Growing up to 3' tall and about 1' wide, purple toadflax is especially smashing planted in groups, where its soft flower spikes can weave through cottage gardens, perennial borders, pollinator plantings, and sunny dry garden beds. Native to southeastern Europe, it brings that relaxed, self-sown garden charm that pairs beautifully with salvias, yarrow, roses, ornamental grasses, lavender, poppies, and other drought-tolerant perennials. Bees and beneficial insects appreciate the long summer bloom season, too.
Plant Linaria purpurea in full sun to part shade with well-drained soil. Once established, it is fairly drought-tolerant and may reseed where happy, giving you more lovely purple toadflax in future seasons. Explore more airy, easy growers in our Linaria collection.
