Our favorite ground-covering succulent, Echeveria elegans, is every bit as elegant as its botanical name suggests. Commonly called Mexican Snowball, this easy succulent forms silvery blue rosettes about 4" tall and 5" across, then happily produces offsets to create a low, texturiffic carpet up to 16" wide.
This tidy echeveria is beautiful in succulent containers, rock gardens, troughs, small-scale groundcovers, and dry garden edges where its cool color and rounded form can be admired up close. In summer, long-lasting 8" arched stems rise above the rosettes, carrying pink and yellow lantern-like blooms for an extra little flourish of charm.
Plant Echeveria elegans in full sun to bright shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Easy to grow, deer resistant, and hardy to about 25 degrees F, Mexican Snowball is a wonderfully useful choice for collectors and new succulent gardeners alike.
