Description
An explosion of starry white flowers in late spring, Deutzia scabra is a durable deciduous shrub with real old-garden romance. Also known as fuzzy deutzia, it produces 4–6" panicles of nodding, fragrant white flowers in May or June, smothering the arching branches for a glorious 2–4 week display.
This adaptable flowering shrub grows quickly to about 6–10' tall and wide, with dark green, toothed oval leaves covered in tiny hairs that inspired its common name. Exfoliating brown bark adds seasonal interest after bloom, while bees happily visit the fragrant flowers. Use fuzzy deutzia as a spring focal point, mixed shrub border plant, flowering screen, or graceful background shrub.
Plant Deutzia scabra in full sun to part shade with fertile, well-drained soil, though it adapts to a range of garden conditions. Deer resistant and easy to prune, it regenerates quickly and can be shaped after flowering. Explore more garden structure and bloom in our Shrubs & Trees collection.
