Description
Textural, flat, and wonderfully ferny, Cotula ‘Platt’s Black’ is an extremely easy groundcover for shade with a rich, moody color that makes small spaces feel instantly more interesting. Growing only about 1" tall and at least 1' across, it spreads congenially without turning into a garden bully.
Also known as Platt’s Black Brass Buttons, this low groundcover forms a tight mat of finely divided foliage in dark bronze, green, and blackish tones. It is perfect between stepping stones, along shady paths, in containers, troughs, woodland plantings, and small-scale groundcover areas where texture matters. The foliage is the star, creating a soft, intricate carpet that pairs beautifully with ferns, heucheras, violas, sedges, hostas, and other shade-loving plants.
Plant Cotula ‘Platt’s Black’ in part shade to shade with well-drained soil and regular to moderate water. Trim lightly if needed to keep it tidy. Petite, durable, and full of character, it is a fabulous choice for detailed garden spaces. Explore more useful spreaders in our Cotula collection.
