Description
Pretty, tough, and wildly useful, Convolvulus sabatius is one of the hardest-working evergreen groundcovers you can add to a sunny garden. From late spring well into fall, it produces a near nonstop show of bluish-purple, open-faced, funnel-shaped flowers, each 1–2" across and glowing beautifully against its low, trailing foliage.
Unlike some annual morning glories, Convolvulus sabatius is not an invasive climber. Instead, it forms a dense, vining mat up to 3' across, making it excellent for dry garden beds, slopes, erosion control, pathway edges, retaining walls, hanging baskets, and decorative pots. Let it spill, weave, and soften — it does all three with effortless Mediterranean charm.
Plant Convolvulus sabatius in full sun with well-drained soil, though it can tolerate some shade and tougher soils once established. Drought tolerant, butterfly-friendly, and deer resistant, it needs little water after settling in. Cut back in winter to encourage dense growth. Hardy to about 15°F, though it may go deciduous in colder Zone 8 gardens.
