Description
Rare, elegant, and wildly desirable, Cantua buxifolia ‘Tricolor’ is an evergreen Andean shrub with spectacular flaring trumpet flowers. Also known as the Sacred Flower of the Andes or Chilean bellflower, this pre-Columbian treasure blooms heavily for 2–3 months in spring, with additional flowers appearing later in the season.
Growing quickly into a dense, multi-branching shrub about 6' tall and wide, ‘Tricolor’ carries small deep green leaves and plentiful upright to arching stems. Its 3" long blooms are unforgettable: golden-yellow tubes opening to rich pink and white corollas, creating a hummingbird-friendly display full of color and movement. It is gorgeous as a specimen shrub, large container plant, or dramatic addition to a protected border.
Plant Cantua buxifolia ‘Tricolor’ in rich, well-drained soil. Side-dress with 1–2" of compost in spring and summer, and cut back to about 3' in late summer to keep it luxuriant. Hardy to about 20–23°F, but not fond of excessive heat. Explore more unusual bloomers in our Cantua - Chilean Bellflower collection.
