Green Onion
(Allium fistulosum
)

Superior in flavor and RELIABLY PERENNIAL – this permaculture garden must-have is also known as “bunching onions” or “scallions”. Enjoy fresh green onions all year – you don’t even need to dig up the whole plant, just harvest the greens as needed and leave the bulb. Usually mild, they can be spicier during the Summer and sweeter when grown in fertile soil. Once mature the plants reproduce by seed and side shoots, so you’ll end up with bunches of self-perpetuating green onions you can dig up and replant forever. For long pale stems, pile up soil around the base. Blooms in its second year – the immature flower stalks have a unique sweet flavor and can be used as chives. Winter dormant.
