Lettuce 'Yugoslavian Red'

An heirloom lettuce from a family in Marburg (now Slovania) ‘Yugoslavian Red’ is so pretty that it can be used as an ornamental as well as a food plant. The bright green leaves are tinged and splashed with rose and deep red - they really bring color to a salad. Also a great, colorful garnish. If you cut the head in half, the inside is creamy green and succulent with a buttery mild flavor. Since its introduction in the U.S. in 1987, it has become one of the most popular of butterhead lettuces. Plant in good garden soil and in full sun, part or filtered sun in hot Summer areas and keep them well watered and fertilized. It can form full heads 10-12” across, so plant seedlings at least 6” apart.
