This butterfly magnet is easy. It does NOT require hard pruning and produces long-blooming and long-lasting cut flowers!

The standout clusters of 1” bright chiffony cerise colored flowers with vivid yellow stamens are magnets for hummingbirds, bees and other pollinators!

This highly reliable perennial has stunning blooms that are HEAT and DROUGHT tolerant, making this a great asset in both well-drained rock and cottage gardens. 10” tall and 1-2.5’ across with attractive and substantial slender leaves, it blooms exuberantly spring thru fall, bearing countless large and luminous, lightly scented, 3-4”, silky bright lemon-yellow “saucers” that are loved by hummingbirds and hawkmoths.

This 5’ stunner is extremely tough and drought tolerant. Lemon yellow, 2” blooms are held on amazing 2’ across candelabra-like spikes that last for months. Cut back and more will appear! Spectacular, silvery, 3-5’ wide foliage rosettes are covered in white down. Easy in well-drained, poor to average soil. Self-sows!

Echinops ritro ruthenicus
3” across, richly colored blue “tennis balls” stand out on strong multi-branching ghostly white stems above finely cut, shimmery silver foliage to 2’ across. Unfazed by the heat, it’s a perfect choice for a dry garden. Blooms mid-summer to fall. Loved by butterflies. Make unusual and fun cut flowers!

'Midnight'
This Penstemon ‘Midnight’ is long-living and EASY. Grows to 3’ x 3’ with deep purple flowers, that are very popular with bees and hummingbirds. Takes drought on the coast but looks better with some summer water. May be cut back to 6” to encourage another round of blooms and then should be cut back hard in the winter.

Penstemon X gloxinioides
'Thorn'
A long-lived and massive blooming Penstemon that reaches 3’ high x wide, with white-blushed-pink trumpets and substantial foliage. An excellent choice for mixed perennial, shrub gardens, and even dry gardens! Blooms spring thru fall and appreciates a side-dress of compost in spring and summer. Cut back spent spikes regularly to encourage rebloom.

In this fun talk she’ll demonstrate the basics of quick vinegar pickling and how to create delicious pickles at home with no special equipment, including how to make the iconic cucumber pickle and a mixed pickle composed of other seasonal veggies! Elizabeth, has over 15 years of experience with local, sustainable and handmade food.
