Frilly, cornflower-like, 3-4” primrose yellow flowers appear in abundance from late Spring thru early Fall! Native to wetland areas along the coastal plains of NC, FL and LA, this “Stokes’ Aster” forms a basal rosette of elliptic green leaves (each to 6”). From this rise stems with smaller leaves, with mature plants about 1’ tall and 2’ wide. Popular with bees and butterflies, the flowers have notched rays surrounding pincushion-like centers and offer their beauty for a full week. Once established it is one tough plant, with few pest or disease problems, and will multiply into dense clumps if given sufficient water. Deer and rabbits tend to leave it alone. Evergreen in zones 8 and higher, it makes a wonderful addition to any sunny bed - its soothing but exuberant flowers working with most color schemes. Plant in well-drained soil in full sun. Remove spent flowering stems for prolonged blooming. Plants can be cut back to basal foliage after bloom. Mulch plants to protect from hard freezes.
