Loropetalum chinense var. rubrum ‘Plum Delight’ | Photo courtesy of David J Stang | This fantastic selection of Chinese fringe flower is noteworthy for the deep burgundy color of its leaves from the first flush onwards. Unlike many other varieties, Plum Delight's deep color does not fade to dark green. Clusters of pink, finger-like flowers appear from early spring to mid-summer and attract hummingbirds. Leafing out in spring, plants gradually mature to a height of 4-5', with arching branches that can spread to 7'. With its dense foliage and deep plum color, this evergreen Loropetalum is a popular choice for providing a dark contrast to other woodland greenery. A versatile shrub, it can be planted in full sun to bright shade and it requires little upkeep beyond shaping. It makes an ideal focal point but is practical enough to use as a hedge. It prefers well-drained, lightly acidic soil and a little occasional pruning to reduce the thicket of undergrowth. Often left alone by deer. |
