This charming andrare California native vineis known affectionately as “Roving Sailor” or “Climbing Snapdragon” for its tendency to scramble or climb, depending on how you use it. Found throughout the southwest on stoney slopes, in washes or in desert flats, it features triangular, 1-2” lobed leaves, which mound to 8-10” then spread out from 3-6’. Hardy and deciduous, it blooms here in CA in the Spring, while in Texas it can bloom well into the Fall. The one and a half inch, snapdragon-esque, flared tubular flowers can be magenta through violet with white throats. Can be grown in a container to spill over its edges, planted against a warm wall to add color, or used in a hanging basket on a deck. Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies and is a host plant for the Common Buckeye. Not fussy about soil, doesn’t need much water and just either tidy it in the winter or cut it back to the ground.
