Bearing buckets of golden berries as brilliant as the summer sun, this CA native shrub is a treat for the eye and the birds! A prized selection of the widely dispersed native toyon, Heteromeles 'Davis Gold' is similarly adored by birds, who find shelter in its limbs and a welcome winter food source in its golden berries. Robust and evergreen, its deep green 2-4” serrated leaves provide year-round interest. In late spring and summer, charming sprays of white, sweet-smelling flowers will get the pollinators in proximity all aflutter. It is disease resistant and drought tolerant, needing very little water once established (although ‘Davis Gold’ can stand some wet conditions in well-draining soil). Developing into an impressive 10’x10’ shrub, it can also be maintained as a petit tree with a little pruning. Thriving in sun and partial shade alike, this is just the ticket if you’re looking for an easy-to-grow hedge or a loose planting under an oak tree. Hardy to 0°. Believed to have originated from seed collected on Santa Catalina Island, the name comes from UC Davis grad student Charles Filmer.
