Epiphyllum

This orchid cactus features clusters of lovely, six inch salmon-pink flowers, their rear rows a translucent salmon, while the inner petals are a glowing orange. It blooms most commonly in spring but sometimes at multiple times of the year. These funnel-shaped flowers are wide at the opening and feature contrasting white stamen. Notched, succulent leaves are green but often acquire a red blush in cooler months. Cascading branches vary in length from 12 to 30”. Primarily grown as a houseplant, it will want bright indirect light to promote blooming. Early morning or late afternoon sun is also fine. Use a potting mix of half potting soil and half orchid bark or pumice. Water frequently during the growing season, to promote healthy stems and success in flowering. Provide drier conditions during the winter months. Fertilize monthly with a 10-10-10 formula after the cactus quits blooming (mid-summer). Continue until the plant enters dormancy, usually in November.
