Cottage Garden Gorgeous!

Your window to plant annual California native wildflowers comes to a close mid-April but there’s still plenty of time to get these sweethearts in the ground now for Spring bloom! One of our favorite bloom-at-the-same-time combos – and easiest – is this timeless cottage classic featuring our ever-present Springtime staple Nemophila menziesii "Baby Blue Eyes", and fellow natives sunny Eschscholzia caespitosa "Tufted Poppy" and cheery, cherry Lupinus succulentus ‘Rodeo Rose'.

Providing a pop of peachy goodness is Alonsoa meridionalis 'Apricot' – a powerhouse of a perennial that blooms freely for months. Just cut it back after it's all bloomed out, ply with compost, and it's back to blooming before you know it! Old-fashioned favorite Cynoglossum amabile 'Blue Showers' the the perfect true-blue foil for all those pastel pinks and peaches.

Coronavirus/Covid-19 Advisory as of March 16, 2020: Our 2.5 acre nursery remains OPEN (exempt per Contra Costa Health Services Order of the Health Officer, section 10.f.iii) and you are welcome to visit our large, open-air environment which allows for 6' of social distancing.

Lupinus succulentus ‘Rodeo Rose’
An easy and fast-growing filler sure to bring all the bees to the yard with months of candylicious (and rare for a Lupine) pink and cherry bicolor blooms! Sweetly scented! Mildew/rust free!
Eschscholzia caespitosa “Tufted Poppy” Cynoglossum amabile 'Blue Showers'
Eschscholzia caespitosa “Tufted Poppy”
Nothing says meadowy like CA native “Tufted Poppy!” Plant here and there for maximum cheer and an abundance of sweetly scented Primrose flowers. Pretty, ferny foliage. Self-sows.

Gorgeous anytime and anywhere, these old-fashioned 3' tall “Chinese Forget-Me-Nots” burst into a cloud of sky blue perfection, turning any garden instantly romantic. Self-sows!
Delphinium elatum 'Sunny Skies' Alonsoa meridionalis 'Apricot'
Delphinium elatum 'Sunny Skies'
Sky blue blooms on MASSIVE spikes to 6' tall are enough to melt your heart! A long-lived cottage garden essential – bait for snails until established, then enjoy! Deer resistant, hardy USDA zone 3!
Alonsoa meridionalis 'Apricot'
We can't think of an easier, cheerier, bigger-bang-for-your-buck bloomer than this must-have Chilean perennial. Blooms for months Spring thru Fall with deadheading. Self-sows!

Check out our VIDEO spotlighting even more of our favorite dream-team combinations. So many of these wonderful CA natives and Mediterranean annuals self-sow, which means you'll enjoy repeat performances next Spring and beyond!

For maximum happiness (yours AND the plants), be sure to give your hearty new friends well-draining and fertile soil (i.e. NOT heavy clay). A 1" layer of compost on top of the soil just after planting will give them a much-appreciated boost and get them off to a good start.
