Thriving in poor, sandy or rocky soil “Lead Plant” is one HARDY, drought tolerant, heat and wind resistant perennial surprisingly adaptable to a wide range of conditions. Extremely tough with a long taproot reaching as much as 4’ deep, it’s valued for erosion control, hellstrips, grassy and low maintenance gardens. Handsome and shrub-like to 3’x3-4’ with mounding pinnate foliage, ours blooms from June-September with unique, almost iridescent, deep purple-blue 4-8” radiating spikes highlighted with golden anthers. Even prettier I think in well-drained garden soil with occasional Summer water and a Spring side-dress of compost. A terrific pollinator plant and unusual cut flowers. Better every year, best not to prune back in the first few years.
