Salvia splendens
'Sao Borja'

Salvia_splendens_sao_borja

Reaching its full height of 6' in its first year, this unusual shade-loving Salvia produces scads of smoky amethyst blooms Spring thru Fall. A wonderful source of nectar and pollen for bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, it is an excellent choice for deer-plagued gardens being both naturally repellent to them & also a rapid grower. Performs best in dappled light - happy in morning sun, but will not tolerate direct afternoon light. 'Sao Borja' is tender to the cold, she will need protection from any frost. For this reason she is often grown as an annual in colder zones. An excellent plant for quickly filling in a space and attracting multitudes of wildlife, she can also be grown in a large container (5 gallons or more) but may not reach its full impressive height. Tends to perform best in areas with cooler Summers.
