Ferula communis
“Giant Fennel”

In this instance “Giant” is no exaggeration as this spectacular and architectural plant from the Mediterranean has been known to reach 15’. Emerging in Spring as a great, feathery clump, 3’ tall and wide, by early Summer it sends up a great, thick stalk, getting taller by the day, with tight flower buds. By mid-Summer, it tops out at about 17’ tall, blooming slowly over several weeks. The enormous flower heads - up to 18” across - contain thousands of tiny, bright yellow flowers.
