Bomarea hirtella

 Bomarea hirtella

I file ALL Bomareas under “YES” & this one also gets a “pretty please with sugar on top” because its demure pink flowers are sugar & spice & everything nice on top of all that weird & wild Bomarea appeal. Punchy pink outer tepals pair with speckled soft green & yellow inner tepals with dark spots. In bloom off & on through all the warmer months of the season where hardy, my advice is to keep it somewhere you can appreciate the blooms up close. A perfect specimen for a large, beautiful container, it’s also at home on the ground. Provide support for the twining stems. Very tough & drought tolerant once established (like its Alstroemeria cousins!) but looks best in rich well drained soil with average water. Clean up the spent shoots by cutting them to the ground annually to keep things tidy. The huge seed pods with their glowing red seeds add interest & appeal! Native to Central America.
