Podranea brycei
“Port John’s Creeper”

Easy, fast & very showy, Podranea brycei bears beautiful, large bunches of fragrant, lilac-pink, open, trumpet shaped flowers to 3” wide. The blooms are held on the branch tips & appear May thru Sept. It sends up many tall stems from a woody base. The foliage is wisteria-like & a pretty, glossy green. Quite vigorous, so it will probably need pruning every few years (which will increase bloom). Can be pruned into a shrub (by cutting back hard every year) & is an excellent vine for arbors & pergolas & as a ground cover. Makes a great screening plant against a fence too. Does not have tendrils, so needs to be tied to supports. An established plant is tolerant of salt spray, heat, strong sunlight, wind & periods of drought. Does best in full sun, rich, regularly watered soil with a topping of compost once or twice a year. Hardy to 20 degrees. Light frosts may cause Podranea to lose leaves but they re-grow quickly. Note: This is not Pandorea or “Wonga Wonga” vine.
