Asclepias fruticosa
“Family Jewels Tree”

This small tree-like perennial from Jamaica & South America is sure to inspire giggles. It’s in the Milkweed family, and grows 4-6’ tall. I’ve really never noticed the flowers, so they are probably insignificant. It’s the seed pods that are well, uh, . . . . “showy”. They are balloon-like, about 1 ½-2” across, translucent lime green, and have little spines sticking out. Though humorous, I think they would make excellent landscaping plants as they are fast growing, trouble free, have a nice “lollipop” form and are DROUGHT TOLERANT.
