| Salvia spathacea
“Crimson Sage”
“Hummingbird Sage”
In A Book of Sages, Betsy Clebsch has many nice things to say about this robust perennial endemic to California, calling it one of the most beautiful native perennials. This 1 - 3’ tall evergreen sage bears large, dense, lemon sized whorls of 1” bright red to dark purple flowers February thru June. The calyces are a beautiful dark ruby red & remain attractive & interesting after flowering. Handsome, evergreen foliage, fruity scent, & unlike many Salvias, it lasts well as a cut flower. Betsy says they are wonderful planted with Nemophila menziesii “Baby Blue Eyes” & California poppies all blooming together in the spring. Annie
