Broccoli
'De Cicco'

Broccoli 'De Cicco' is an old Italian variety, first introduced in 1880. It is a sprouting type meaning that if you harvest the main broccoli heads when they are around 3” in diameter, the plants will then produce a large amount of sideshoots over a long period. The heads mature at a different rate - not good for commercial production, but
excellent for the home gardener. Pick the heads & sideshoots when they are still firm & green. You can eat them as the blooms start to open but they will not taste as good. Broccoli is definitely best grown as a Fall/Winter crop in the Bay Area. Plant individual plants 18” apart in a well fertilized garden bed. Keep well watered until the rains start.
