Aeonium spathulatum var. cruentum

I grew this plant in the tiniest pot I had for years and loved watching the rosettes close up into little spheres during stress and drought. Does this sound sadistic? I certainly didn't mean it to be! This species responds to the stress of drought by tightening its rosettes so that little water is lost during the hottest, driest parts of the year. How efficient and fascinating! In sun, this rare succulent makes a rainbow-hued rounded shrub to 2' or more high and wide. In shade, the plant is greener, but is still a lovely subject. Size is easily controlled by putting the plant into a small pot, as I did. Profuse yellow flowers atop red stems appear in late Spring. From the Canary Islands!
