Vernonia crinita “Ironweed”
Up your wildlife gardening karma with this pretty Aster relative. The clusters of deep purple blooms are great for providing a nectar source to bees & butterflies July-October. With a slender & graceful form, this Vernonia grows to 5’-6’ tall & 1’-2’ tall & has long, lance-shaped green leaves. Naitive to the Midwest praries of the US & indeed ideal for the prarie garden look, a la Piet Oudolf. Would look great planted with tall grasses like Schizachyrum scoparium & Echinacea pallida. Reseeds.
