Iris douglasiana ‘Canyon Snow’

‘Canyon Snow’ is probably the most famous of all the Pacific Coast irises. Selected in 1978 by Dara Emery at the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden, the Iris Society immediately recognized it as an outstanding cultivar.  Its beauty & health have made it a part of most California native gardens & the flowers are large (4-5” across), yet very graceful & pure white with a golden patch in the center. It is exceptionally floriferous & the crisp whiteness of the flowers is set off by very dark green foliage. A Spring stand of ‘Canyon Snow’ is a glory to behold! Flower stems are 1’ tall & the plant makes a clump 4’ across. It grows with little moisture, yet the leaves stay almost evergreen. Free of the rust that can afflict other Iris in the Summer. Should the clump need rejuvenating, it can easily be divided in the Winter. ‘Canyon Snow’ is a true gem for the shade garden.
