| Acacia cavens
“Espinillo”
A wonderfully fragrant small tree. The yellow flowers cover this tree in spring & have a wonderful scent, & in fact are used in perfumery. Folks in South America where this tree is native to put the branches in closets or a between their linens to make them smell good. An additional ornamental quality (that is often overlooked by gardeners) is the thorns. It produces 1” long pure white thorns that contrast nicely with the delicate green foliage. Plus it makes a great barrier – natural barbed wire! Also there is tannin in the seed pods that can be used to tan hides & the flowers are great for bees in honey production. Native to Chile, Peru & Argentina. Grows between 10’-30’ tall.
