Campsis chinensis (syn. Campsis grandiflora)
“Chinese Trumpet Creeper”
photo:(left) Stefano Pagnoni (right) Dalgial
An excellent fast growing vine for quick cover with large, showy flowers. Growing 20-25’ tall & wide, C. chinensis needs support, like a trellis, since it’s a twiner with occasional aerial roots. Each red-orange bloom is 4-6” long. A profuse bloomer, beginning in July & continuing till frost. Hummingbirds love the flowers. The dark green leaves are deciduous. Less aggressive than Campsis radicans, which can overtake many gardens, it roots along the stems & can be used as a groundcover. Native to China & Japan. All parts of the plant can be used medicinally as a tonic for “women’s complaints” as well as a blood tonic & diuretic. Drought tolerant once established.
