Calylophus hartwegii fendleri
“Fendler’s Sundrops”

This tough plant can take a serious dose of heat & drought & still look pretty. The blooms are showy, 2” wide, crisp yellow & form a square with the angled petals. From the Evening Primrose family, the blossoms will open in the afternoon & remain open until the next morning. The flowers provide nectar to night-flying moths. Blooming in Summer, each flower lasts 24 hours but then fades to an attractive orangy-pink that gives the plant a nice sunset coloration. Grows to about 10” tall & 2’ wide & makes a nice groundcover when planted in mass. Native to Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico & Arizona. It can take rocky, gravelly soil but will need at least a soil that is well draining. Used by Navajo to treat internal bleeding.
