Lavatera assurgentiflora
“Island Mallow”

Originally found only on the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California, this dazzling, fast growing & drought tolerant shrub was brought to the mainland in the 19th century where it has since naturalized. Quickly growing to 12’ x 12’ with attractive toothed maple-like leaves, it blooms almost year around with heaviest bloom from mid-Spring to mid-Summer. The flowers are 2”-3” across & silky cerise in color, sometimes with white stripes. An excellent choice for a fast growing wind break or hedge in coastal areas as it will RESIST WIND & SALT SPRAY. Not fussy about soil as long as there is some drainage & very drought tolerant once established. Attracts hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, birds & quail love it! Hardy to 16 degrees F. Sheer back to keep a dense form.
