| Trifolium fucatum
This California native annual is marked with interesting brown and silver patterns. The flowers are large and creamy white and then age to a rose color. Native to wet meadows, it will still take most soils with average water. This plant fixes nitrogen, which means it has a symbiotic relationship with the bacteria in the soil. The bacteria forms nodules on the plants’ roots, which then fix atmospheric nitrogen. This makes the nitrogen available to the plant and to other plants around it. When Trifolium fucatum is planted under apple trees it is said that the tree will produce tastier fruit.
