Ferraria divaricata
Seeing the bizarre, fascinating and sweetly fragrant flowers of Ferraria
for the first time is an unforgettable moment for most plant fiends.
And a novice might think because they are so unusual that they are hard
to grow. Au contraire! As long as you lay off the Summer water (when
they go dormant) Ferrarias are simple to grow and are tough, long-lived
plants too. Arising from corms that increase in numbers in a chain-like
formation, Ferraria divaricata will grow to about 8” tall, with
sword-like leaves and over time, produce many, multi-branching, flowering
stems. The blooms are easily 2” across, Irisy-star shaped, with
intensely crinkled edges and amazing, erect, hair-like tufts in the
center. Bloom period is about 3 weeks. Excellent for a Summer-dry rock
garden and we love them in clay pots, so you can view them up close
and put them aside when they go dormant. Well-drained soil.
