Aeonium nobile
If I were English, I’d call this rare Aeonium species “Smashing!” But
since I’m not, Ill have to describe it as “Fabulous!” and
certainly one of the best of the genus. Endemic to the Canary Islands, this
robust species forms large rosettes of thick, fleshy, rounded, olive green
leaves with edges prominently tinged red. Up to 2’ tall when it blooms,
the unbranched stem forms a very large, flowering head made of thousands of
bright red flowers. It’s monocarpic, so after blooming it will pass into
the great beyond, but not before giving up 1,000’s of seeds that germinate
readily. Its natural habitat is lava rock so give it very well drained soil.
