Calochortus luteus
‘Golden Orb’
“Yellow Mariposa Lily”

photo:www.dalehameister.com

Oh, how those who live in colder climates envy us for our Mariposa Lilies! This new clone of our native bulb was selected & raised in Holland. Great big, golden, bowl-shaped flowers are bright canary yellow with an intense speckling of warm brown in the centers. Growing 12 - 14” tall, it starts life as a single leaf followed by flowering stems bearing several blooms in succession from late Spring to early Summer. After bloom, the foliage dies back as the bulbs go dormant. NO SUMMER WATER should be given at this time. Watering (or rain) should begin again in the Fall. All Calochortus require fast draining soil - gritty is best & a definite rest in Summer. Fertilize next year & beyond with a ½ strength fertilizer during active growth. They are wondrous specimens in a deep container (at least 6” deep) & perfect for the Summer-dry bed. Well worth your time & effort. Bait for snails. CA Native.
