“Island Shooting Star”
So beloved & so rarely available in plant form, “Shooting Star” is one of California’s most delightful Spring wildflowers. “Island Shooting Star” grows somewhat bigger & is more robust & garden tolerant than the straight species. From January to April, the charming, pendulant, almost Cyclamen-like flowers appear borne in clusters atop slender, vertical stems to 16” tall. The foliage, reappearing each December, makes a small whorl of fresh, green, spatulate leaves. “Shooting Star” goes dormant in Summer & should not get any Summer water if you want it to stick around a long time. Excellent in containers, rock gardens or on hillsides with good drainage. Always graceful & charming, it’s a sight to see under our native Redbud, Cercis occidentalis, with their similar flower color & simultaneous bloom time.
