Valeriana officinalis
“Valerian”
This important herb, commonly used for its sedative effects, also makes
a pretty perennial for the garden. Lovely in bloom & in seed, it
bears dense clusters of fragrant, tiny, white or light pink flowers
atop strong, vertical stalks that branch out at the top. Forms a nice
strong clump adorned with attractive, bright green & aromatic pinnate
leaves. “Valerian” has a long bloom season from June thru
September. If it stops flowering, cut it back to 2’ tall for a
repeat performance. “Valerian” prefers moist, rich soil
though is somewhat drought tolerant. EASY & may self sow. An excellent
background plant for roses & shorter cottage garden plantings.
