Other than never giving it any water, I don’t think one could kill this beautiful and dependable Japanese native. From a spritely base of pretty Columbine-like foliage in Spring, it shoots up thick sturdy upright purplish stalks to 6-7’ tall. Come June these burst into a huge cloud – 3’ across – of lavender-pink flowers set off by a boss of prominent fluffy soft-yellow anthers. Charm incarnate! Ideal for rising above Roses and shorter subjects. Some say it’s best massed but my single plantings never fail to impress. Deciduous but returns for an even better show each season. Rich, loamy soil. Deer resistant! Best of the
genus!
