Salvia carduacea “Thistle Sage”

Crazy cool and quick to bloom, this has got to be one of the wildest natives you can grow! Yes, it’s an annual but we’re talkin’ first-rate entertainment here! To 2’ tall, the whole plant is wooly white, including the leafy rosette and upright stems topped by totally trippy sputnik-ball clusters with purple points. Large frilly lavender flowers burst strangely from the clusters, sporting brilliant orange anthers on long stamens. Native to drier areas of the state, so provide excellent drainage (easy in a pot) and water to establish, then let it go dry.
