Clematis paniculata (AKA C. terniflora) "Sweet Autumn Clematis" Blessed with a deliciously heady vanilla fragrance and an incredible, practically solid cascade of starry creamy-white 1” blooms late Summer thru Fall, “Sweet Autumn Clematis” is also a super tough “you-can’t-kill-it” twining vine. As it’s a most vigorous grower – it can reach 20’ in its first or second year – you can use it to cover a fence, arbor or pillar in a jiffy. It blooms on new (very fast) growth, so prune it hard to 1’ after bloom (and again in Spring if you want to grow half the size). We also grow it in a half barrel where it only reaches 8’. Average, well-drained soil. Cut back immediately after bloom where self-sown seedlings are a problem. |
