Helleborus niger
“Christmas Rose”
Elegant & not hard to grow, “Christmas Rose” has
been cultivated since Roman days. Sumptuous, nodding, pure white
blooms are 2” across & centered with a crown of golden
stamens. Held nicely above the evergreen foliage, they appear December
thru early Spring, even through freezing temps. The large, lustrous,
dark green, leathery leaves seem to rise directly from the soil.
A bit harder to grow than H. orientalis, Helleborus niger does best
in moist, rich, composted, alkaline soil, so if you add a bit of
lime, they’ll be so much the happier. 1’ tall by 1.5’ spread.
