Linum usitatissimum
“Annual Blue Flax”
With a history of use going back before 7000 B.C., Linum usitassimum
has a huge history not only as the source of linen, but also as a food
& medicine. Besides that, it’s awfully pretty. Quickly growing
to 3’ tall with very upright stems that branch out near the base
of the main stalk, it’s topped in late Spring & into Summer
with lovely, sky blue, single blooms that move in the breeze. Extremely
EASY & FAST growing, it makes an almost instant vertical accent. And
then, after it’s done, you can eat the seeds chock full of the currently
touted Omega 3 & Omega 6 oils & antioxidants (must be why Charlemagne
in the 8th century passed laws requiring his subjects to consume flax
seed!). There you have it! Reseeds!
