Oenothera
acaulis aurea
This evening primrose is a wonderful plant for warm summer nights.
The plant itself consists of a small rosette of deeply cut leaves and
the flowers are about 1” across, lemon yellow and very pleated.
The real wonder happens before sundown, when the short, stem-less flowers
open in 15 seconds, like time-lapse photography in real time. It has
become a summer-time ritual in my garden to gather around the plants
in the evening to watch the buds open. This is the perfect experience
to share with a child or any grown up with a sense of wonder. It appears
to be an annual, but will probably leave behind a few seedlings for
next year.
