plants you must try!
Papaver ‘Taffeta’
– A yummilicious new Breadseed Poppy! Deepest
purple-ruby flowers are at least 4” across with wavy, feathery
petals contrasted beautifully by the bright yellow ovary. Spring
blooming hardy annual. To 4’ tall & self-sows.
Nasturtium ‘Margaret Long’
– One of the rarest & most lusted after plants we grow,
they fly out of the nursery! Gorgeous,
double, peachy-apricot blooms are borne prolifically above the mounding,
rich green foliage. It does trail, but is not a vining type. EASY!

Roemeria refracta –
We were delighted to see this very rare annual Mediterranean poppy
bloom in our gardens last Spring. Nice
& compact (12” x 12”), the luminous, red, single
blossoms are contrasted with a central black blotch & offset
by many fascinating, golden anthers. Reminds me of a hedgehog! EASY!
Sun.
Selago serrata –
Sometimes all the work that goes into trialing so many new &
unknown varieties really pays off! We couldn’t find any info
on this South
|
African perennial when we received the seed. And
wow! It quickly became one of our new “Must Haves,”
especially for those of us who seek new, drought tolerant treasures.
Truly evergreen, it quickly grows to 3’ tall & 3’
across. The small, bright green, semi-succulent, triangular &
recurved leaves are held densely & tightly along the multitude
of base-branching upright stems.
Throughout Summer, it bears lots of long-lasting, 3”-4”
across, compact, bright blue-lavender umbels atop each stem. Easy
& carefree, it makes a colorful statement in a dry garden or
container. Hardy to USDA Zone 8.
Mentzelia lindleyi ‘ Blazing
Star’ Wondrous, 3”, bright silky yellow star
flowers are borne in late Spring & Summer
on this extremely showy & hard to find California native annual.
Large & fascinating stamens & scented too! 1’-3’
tall. Sun, avg-low water.
Clarkia breweri —
Beautiful & surprisingly fragrant! We are so lucky to have this
rare California native. Rich, mid-pink, 1” blooms are well
displayed on slender, arching, multi-branched stems in late Spring
to Summer. 15” x 15”. Sun – Pt. Sun. Annual. (See
photo on page 5).
Drosanthemum bicolor —
An exciting drought tolerant perennial from South Africa. Growing
to 3’ tall & 4’ across in a single season, this
tough lovely had visitors salivating at our
|
nursery last Summer. Forming a dense, trailing mound
of zillions of branching, reddish stems & small, linear, succulent
foliage, it’s very attractive even before bloom. And in bloom,
it’s a looker! The 1 ½”, very double, bi-colored
strawflowers are bright yellow & perfectly encircled with bright
red outer petals. The fun is in the petting – surprisingly
soft & silky. No Summer water needed. Sun/Pt. sun, hardy to
USDA Zone 8.
Scabiosa caucasica ‘Fama’
—This wonderful perennial pincushion” is not new but
is hard to find since the introduction of
its mass produced
(and wimpy!) competitor Scabiosa ‘Butterfly Blue.’ I
want to tell you how much I love this old fashioned plant! So rewarding
& reliable, in zones 16 & 17, it blooms year round! The
large, 3”–4” across, deep lavender-blue, sweetly
scented flowers bob atop 2’-3’ tall, upright stems.
I love it with Alonsoa meridonalis ‘Apricot.’ Easy &
mildew free! Sun, rich soil, avg. water. Hardy to USDA zone 3.
Lathyrus odorata ‘Marion’
— The huge, elegant & intensely fragrant flowers
on this rare “Spencer” sweet pea created quite a “waiting
list” when visitors saw our mother plant last year. Later
blooming than most sweet peas, they love our cool, coastal Summers.
Self-sows! Limited supply. |
